A lone leopard seal drew attention at Petone Beach in Lower Hutt New Zealand over the weekend before returning to sea early Monday.
Leopard seals are wild marine predators and can travel far beyond Antarctic waters. A resting animal on shore may simply be conserving energy and does not need to be pushed back into the water.
Wildlife officials routinely advise people to give seals ample space keep dogs away and avoid positioning themselves between the animal and the sea. Crowding can stress an animal and create risk for onlookers.
The brief visit offers a useful reminder that urban coastlines remain wildlife habitat. Observation from a respectful distance is safer and often gives the animal the quiet time it needs to leave on its own.
