The Kahuku Unit of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is reopening September 3 after crews cleared damage caused by heavy rain and strong winds during Hurricane Lala.
The unit and its visitor contact station will return to their normal Thursday-through-Sunday schedule, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Park staff removed fallen trees from Kahuku Road and most trails, but the road above Lower Palm Trailhead remains deeply rutted. Four-wheel drive is recommended beyond that point, and the road remains closed above the boot-decontamination station.
Visitors should also watch for hanging branches, loose rocks and uneven trail surfaces. Reopening means the park has restored basic access; it does not mean every storm hazard has disappeared.
Travelers should review the park’s current alerts before leaving and be prepared to turn around where closures or conditions require it.
