When floods damage a national park, restoring yesterday’s design is not enough. Kruger’s rebuilt culverts, strengthened embankments and improved drainage point toward a better standard: recovery should reduce the next disaster’s impact.
That approach protects wildlife operations as much as visitor access. Roads and bridges carry rangers, scientists and emergency responders across enormous landscapes.
Park agencies should publish the resilience goals and performance of major rebuilding projects so protected areas can adapt faster as extreme weather intensifies.
