A Parks Australia expedition to the central Coral Sea Marine Park has reported healthy island ecosystems and thriving seabird populations, alongside uneven recovery on coral reefs affected by marine heat stress.
The findings underline the contrasting condition of habitats within one remote protected area. Islands can remain strong nesting refuges while reefs nearby respond differently to repeated heat events, raising the value of long-term monitoring across land and sea.
Researchers surveyed wildlife and ecosystem health during the voyage. Results will help managers distinguish short-term fluctuation from lasting change and decide where protection, biosecurity and future surveys are most needed.
The Coral Sea Marine Park is one of Australia’s largest marine protected areas. Its distance from major population centers limits some local pressures but does not insulate coral communities from ocean warming.
