A 28.96-hectare hazard-reduction burn is scheduled in Bundjalung National Park near Evans Head on September 4, subject to suitable weather.
New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service says the operation along the Evans River is designed both to reduce bushfire risk and to reintroduce cultural fire practices with the local Bandjalang community. Planning also aims to protect culturally important resource trees and riparian vegetation.
Bundjalung Road, the Gumma Garra day-use area and all formal and informal tracks within the burn zone will remain closed until they are assessed as safe. Smoke may reduce visibility, and people with respiratory conditions are advised to avoid the area or follow their health plans.
The operation illustrates how fire management can combine public safety, ecological protection and living cultural practice. Visitors should rely on current official closure information because weather can alter the schedule.
