Glacier National Park closed the alpine portions of Going-to-the-Sun Road from Avalanche to Jackson Glacier Overlook as heavy rain and strong thunderstorms threatened northwestern Montana.
The closure began at 5 p.m. September 6. The park warned travelers to expect detours delays and limited access while crews respond to fast-moving water debris and saturated soils. Shuttle service was suspended September 7 and the regular 2026 shuttle season has ended.
Officials said affected areas will reopen only after conditions can be evaluated. Mountain weather can shift rapidly and water-related hazards may remain after the heaviest rain passes.
Visitors should check official road-status information before traveling and avoid treating a break in the weather as proof that closed terrain is safe.
