New Zealand Targets Wild Goats and Deer With $9.7 Million Program

New Zealand is directing $9.7 million from its visitor levy toward four years of wild-goat and deer management in major conservation landscapes.

The program covers areas including Whanganui, Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes, Westland Tai Poutini and Fiordland national parks. Introduced browsing animals can suppress native vegetation and undermine earlier restoration work.

Funding will support control operations, monitoring, surveillance and partnerships intended to reduce reinvasion risk.
