South African police have opened a manhunt after a buffalo bull was found killed in a suspected poaching incident in Kruger National Park’s Tshikuyu Block.
According to a police statement, a patrol on August 30 followed signs from a circling vulture to the remains of the animal. Investigators reported finding the buffalo’s head, pieces of skin, five sets of human footprints and dog tracks leading toward the park boundary in the direction of Benndemutale Village.
The South African Police Service described the case as suspected poaching and said the investigation remains active. No arrests had been announced in the statement, and the available evidence does not yet establish who was responsible or how the animal was taken.
Although rhino and elephant cases often dominate international attention, illegal killing of other high-value wildlife also creates enforcement and conservation costs. The case underscores the importance of patrol intelligence, cooperation across park boundaries and careful reporting that does not turn preliminary evidence into conclusions.
