The Tongariro Northern Circuit is expected to operate as a complete loop again this summer, although a delayed hut opening will affect some early-season bookings.
New Zealand’s Department of Conservation says repairs to fire-damaged structures on the Mangatepopo Track are progressing toward a mid-December reopening. The link between Whakapapa Village and Mangatepopo Hut has been missing since fires damaged the route in late 2025.
Poor weather has meanwhile prevented contractors from flying materials to the new Oturere Hut. The hut and adjacent campsite are now scheduled to open for bookings on December 18. DOC says affected visitors will be offered booking changes or refunds.
The agency has also approved a broader overhaul of Mangatepopo Track, including resurfacing, boardwalks and futureproofing work. Visitors should check official alerts and booking information before committing to an itinerary.
